About
The Gate of the Sun is an impressive monolithic structure located at the archaeological site of Tiwanaku, near Lake Titicaca in Bolivia. This stone gateway, carved from a single block, stands approximately 3 meters tall and 4 meters wide and is intricately adorned with iconographic carvings. These carvings are believed to have astronomical significance, possibly serving a calendrical purpose. The central figure depicted is in the Staff God pose, surrounded by attendants, some with avian features, which suggests religious or ritualistic significance. The design reflects the Tiwanaku culture's influence on Inca mythology and iconography. Although its precise original location remains uncertain, the gateway is a testament to the sophisticated artistry and astronomical understanding of the Tiwanaku civilization during the Early Post-Classical Period.
