About
Dandan Oilik, located in the Taklamakan Desert of China, is an archaeological site of great historical significance. This abandoned oasis town thrived from the 6th century CE as a key location along the southern branch of the Silk Road. The site, once a bustling hub, was abandoned before the Tibetan advance at the end of the 8th century. Archaeological finds at Dandan Oilik include remnants of domestic structures such as wooden houses and a Buddhist temple with intricate murals and stucco reliefs. The site has also yielded a variety of manuscripts in different scripts, providing insights into the diverse cultural interactions that took place there. Despite extensive sand coverage, the site offers a glimpse into the interconnected world of the Silk Road era, showcasing both domestic life and religious practices. Today, Dandan Oilik remains off-limits to the public, preserving its historical treasures for future study.
