About

Akhmim, an ancient city located in Upper Egypt, was known for its vibrant cultural and religious history. It served as the capital of the ninth nome, or Chemmite nome, in Ancient Egypt and was the suggested hometown of the official Yuya. The city was a major religious center, with the worship of the ithyphallic god Min, identified with Pan by the Greeks, who was celebrated in grand temples. Akhmim was also famed for its linen-weaving industry, producing beautiful textiles during the Roman and Christian eras. The city's religious significance continued into the Christian era, with numerous monasteries established, including the one founded by Pachomius the Great. Today, little remains of its ancient structures, as the temples were dismantled and reused during the Middle Ages. Akhmim's extensive cemeteries and the recent discovery of a Greco-Roman temple corner with colossal statues testify to its historical richness.
