About

Remojadas is an archaeological site and culture located on Mexico's Veracruz Gulf Coast, active from approximately 100 BCE to 800 CE. Known for its distinctive and expressive ceramic figurines, particularly the 'Sonrientes' or smiling face figurines, Remojadas offers a unique insight into Classic Veracruz culture. The figurines, often found in various contexts such as burials and middens, depict a range of subjects including deities, rulers, and animals, and demonstrate the rare pre-Columbian use of wheel technology. The site holds significant parallels with Maya figurines, suggesting cultural exchanges. Although largely unexplored since initial mid-20th-century investigations, further research is needed to fully understand the cultural and ceremonial significance of the artifacts and their role in the broader Mesoamerican context.
