Its history spans from a small Neolithic settlement around 6500 BCE, evolving into a major urban center by the late 5th millennium BCE. Known as Nagar during the 3rd millennium BCE, it was a capital of a regional kingdom before being destroyed around 2300 BCE by the Akkadians. It later became a center for the Hurrians and flourished under the Mitanni until its destruction by the Assyrians around 1300 BCE.
