About
Brest, a city with a rich and turbulent history, is one of the oldest in Belarus, with its first mention in the 11th century. The city has been a significant cultural and strategic site, witnessing a succession of rulers, including the Kievan Rus', the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and the Russian Empire. Its strategic location made it a focal point in numerous conflicts, notably during World War I and II. The Brest Fortress, a key defensive structure, is notable for its resistance during World War II and is a symbolic Hero Fortress. The city's archaeological significance is further marked by its historical structures, such as synagogues and administrative buildings, and its role in significant treaties and political shifts.
