About
Idalion, an ancient city in Cyprus, was a significant center of copper trade and religious worship from the 3rd millennium BCE. The city, originally inhabited by the Eteocypriotes, developed into a major urban and economic hub. It featured grand palaces and temples dedicated to deities such as Aphrodite and Apollo, highlighting its cultural and religious importance. Idalion's strategic location near copper mines and coastal cities contributed to its prosperity. The city underwent various phases of construction and fortification, notably against Kition's attacks in the 6th century BCE. Despite being conquered by Kition around 450 BCE, Idalion continued to thrive, especially around its east acropolis. The site reveals insights into ancient Cypriot society, governance, and religious practices.
