About
Gufkral, located in the Kashmir Valley of India, is an archaeological site primarily known for its ancient caves that have been utilized by potters. The site, situated near the town of Tral in the Pulwama District, offers evidence of continuous occupation from the Aceramic Neolithic period, around 3000 BCE, through to the Megalithic period. Excavations conducted by the Archaeological Survey of India in the early 1980s revealed five distinct phases of habitation at Gufkral, highlighting its significance as a long-standing human settlement. The site's ancient caves, among the oldest in Kashmir, provide valuable insights into the lifestyle and technological advancements of prehistoric communities in the region.
