Historical Context

About

Gerulata, situated near modern-day Rusovce, Slovakia, was a Roman military camp constructed in the 2nd century CE as part of the defensive frontier system in the Roman province of Pannonia. It served as a fortified camp and played a critical role alongside the Danubian Limes in safeguarding the Roman Empire's northern borders. Archaeological excavations have revealed remnants of its structure, including a well-preserved quadrilateral building with thick walls and various artifacts such as gravestones, bronze, iron, ceramics, and stone pieces. These findings offer insights into the daily life and military operations of the period. The site was abandoned in the 4th century CE when Roman forces withdrew from Pannonia. In July 2021, Gerulata was inscribed as part of the UNESCO World Heritage List, highlighting its historical and cultural significance.
