About

Yaynu is a significant archaeological site located in the Ancash Region of Peru, representing the Recuay culture. Situated on a hilltop more than 4,000 meters above sea level, it is the largest known Recuay settlement and characterized by its extensive fortifications. Covering about 25 hectares at its core, and over 105 hectares including associated structures, Yaynu features stone-built defensive walls, trenches, and terracing, indicative of a fortified hilltop town. The site served as a central hub within a network of small farming villages and showcases the martial aesthetic and political organization of the Recuay culture during the Late Classical to Early Post-Classical periods. The defensive strategies employed highlight the community's need for protection and internal segregation, reflecting the social and political dynamics of the time.
