About
Tigranakert of Artsakh is a significant archaeological site located in the Aghdam District of present-day Azerbaijan, dating back to the Hellenistic period. The city, thought to have been founded by either Tigranes I or his son Tigranes II, covers an area of approximately 50 hectares. The archaeological remains include defensive walls, Hellenistic-style towers, and a basilica church dating from the 5th to the 7th centuries CE, illustrating the city's historical and cultural significance. Inscriptions in both Armenian and Greek uncover a rich intercultural history. The site also witnessed pivotal historical events, such as a battle between Byzantine and Sasanian forces in 625 CE. Despite its tumultuous history, including recent conflicts, Tigranakert remains an essential window into ancient Armenian civilization and the broader Hellenistic world.
