About
The Sacred Valley of the Incas, located in the Andes of Peru, is a rich archaeological site that reflects the historical and cultural evolution of pre-Columbian civilizations. Initially utilized by the Chanapata civilization around 800 BCE for its fertile soil, the valley later became home to the Qotacalla and Killke civilizations before the Inca Empire expanded into the region by 1420 CE. Known for its terraces and irrigation systems, the Sacred Valley was pivotal for maize production, a staple in Inca society. The valley's strategic location facilitated the expansion of the Incan Empire, and its influence is still visible in the ruins and agricultural terraces. The site also holds significance for its role in Inca religious practices and as a battlefield during the Spanish Conquest, notably at Ollantaytambo in 1537 CE.
