About

Wanakawri is an archaeological site located in the Cusco Region of Peru. This site is notably recognized as one of the most important wak'as, or sacred objects, for the Inca culture. Positioned at an elevation of 4,089 meters, Wanakawri stands as one of the highest peaks near Cusco, offering both a strategic and spiritual significance to the Inca people. The site is situated within the districts of San Jerónimo and San Sebastián in the Cusco Province, and the Yaurisque District in the Paruro Province. The presence of ceremonial platforms indicates its use for religious and ritual purposes during the Late Post-Classical Period, particularly in the 15th century CE. Wanakawri's role as a wak'a underscores its importance in the cultural and spiritual landscape of the Inca Empire.
