About

Choquequirao is an extensive Incan archaeological site located in the southern region of Peru, perched at an elevation of 3,050 meters in the Vilcabamba mountain range. It is often compared to Machu Picchu due to its architectural style and significance. The site, primarily dating to the 15th and 16th centuries, served as a ceremonial and administrative center. It features numerous terraces, ceremonial platforms, and a sophisticated water management system, including aqueducts and fountains. Choquequirao played a crucial role as a political, social, and economic hub, possibly designed by Pachacuti and expanded by his son, Tupac Inca Yupanqui. The site also served as a strategic link between the Amazon and Cusco and includes unique Chachapoya-designed artistic features, such as petroglyphs and terraced art. Its construction and layout reflect the Inca's advanced urban planning skills and their reverence for natural and celestial elements.
