About

Store Vildmose, located in northern Jutland, Denmark, is a significant archaeological and ecological site, representing one of the largest contiguous areas of raised bog in the region. Originally a vast lake during the Stone Age, the area transformed into a bog by the Middle Ages due to increased precipitation. Throughout the Iron Age, it was cultivated by ancient farmers, leaving behind various artifacts and relics that have been unearthed over time. By the 1800s, the bog expanded to its greatest extent before modern drainage efforts began. Today, Store Vildmose is a protected area under the EU habitat directive and part of the Natura 2000 network, preserving its unique biodiversity and archaeological significance.
