About
Stobi, located near modern-day Gradsko in North Macedonia, is an archaeological site of significant historical importance. Originally a Paeonian settlement, it evolved through various cultural phases, prominently featuring Roman and early Christian elements. The site includes a mixture of residential, religious, and civic structures, such as houses, palaces, temples, churches, synagogues, aqueducts, and roads. Noteworthy are the artistic mosaics and statues indicative of its rich cultural tapestry. Stobi served as a key center for trade and administration during Roman times and was later a notable Christian hub. The city's strategic location at the confluence of the Erigón and Axiós rivers underscores its historical significance for trade and defense. Despite suffering from invasions and natural disasters, Stobi's ruins provide invaluable insights into the cultural and historical dynamics of the region.
