Historical Context

About

Bylazora, once the largest city of Paeonia, is an important archaeological site located near present-day Sveti Nikole in North Macedonia. Known for its strategic military importance, it controlled key routes between Dardania and Macedonia. In the 3rd century BCE, King Philip V of Macedonia fortified Bylazora, securing it against Dardanian incursions. This fortification effort is indicative of the city's defensive structures, which were crucial for commanding the region's passes. The site was later associated with military movements during the Third Macedonian War, as Perseus of Macedonia sought support from the Gauls at Bylazora. Archaeological excavations have revealed fortification walls and gates, dating back to between the 6th and 3rd century BCE, providing insights into the city's significance during the Middle to Late Iron Age and the Early Classical Period.
