About

The Lagar of Diogo Fernandes Faleiro is an archaeological site located in the civil parish of Santo Espírito, in the municipality of Vila do Porto, within the Azores archipelago. This site features an ancient winepress carved into the rock along the riverbank at the mouth of the Ribeira de Aveiro. Constructed after 1579 by Diogo Fernandes Faleiro, the winepress was a significant facility for producing approximately 11,000 liters of wine annually. The press comprises a roughly square basin hewn from the bedrock, with a system for extracting the grape juice. The site is of historical interest as it reflects the early wine production techniques in the Azores during the 16th century and highlights the role of local landowners like Faleiro in supporting migration and development between the Azores and Brazil during this period.
