Staraya Ladoga, once a major trading and military hub, is situated near the Volkhov River in Russia. Founded in 753 CE, it served as a significant trading port connecting the Baltic Sea to Novgorod and beyond. The site is rich with archaeological features, including fortresses and churches, reflecting its varied historical roles. It became the first capital of the Rus' under the Varangian leader Rurik in 862 CE and played a central role in the trade route from the Varangians to the Greeks. Over time, its significance waned, particularly after the establishment of Novaya Ladoga in 1704 CE. Staraya Ladoga holds important cultural and historical value, offering insights into early medieval trade, politics, and society in Eastern Europe.
