About
Vitudurum was a Roman vicus located in present-day Oberwinterthur, Switzerland, an area rich with diverse archaeological features. Established in the late 1st century BCE or early 1st century CE, it was strategically positioned along a prehistoric route linking Lake Geneva to Lake Constance. The settlement featured a mix of residential, commercial, and religious structures, including houses, a masonry temple, and a sacred precinct. Defensive structures, like a fort on the St. Arbogast church hill, were added during periods of conflict. The site also included sophisticated water management systems and industrial facilities such as kilns and tanneries. Vitudurum thrived during the 1st and 2nd centuries CE, with significant Roman influence evident until it transitioned into a fortified site in the 3rd century CE. Today, it is a site of national significance in Switzerland, offering valuable insights into Roman-era infrastructure and cultural practices.
