About
Sukhothai Historical Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a significant archaeological site in north central Thailand. It encompasses the ruins of the Sukhothai Kingdom, which flourished during the 13th and 14th centuries CE. Originally a Khmer outpost known as Sukhodaya, it gained independence under Tai leadership and became the center of a burgeoning Tai state. The park is home to 193 ruins over 70 square kilometers, including the remains of the royal palace, multiple temples, and the notable Wat Mahathat. The site is renowned for its cultural and historical significance, particularly during the reign of King Ramkhamhaeng, who expanded the kingdom, promoted Theravada Buddhism, and developed the Thai script. The site also features water management systems, industrial and craft kilns, and artistic relics, providing a comprehensive glimpse into the ancient Sukhothai civilization.
