About
Likinlulem is a significant archaeological site located on the island of Kosrae in the Federated States of Micronesia. The site covers over 7 acres on either side of Likinlulem Stream, now a mangrove swamp, on Kosrae's southwestern coast. Archaeologically, it features at least nine large enclosures, a channelized stream, a canoe landing, and a large open platform that floods at high tide. Occupied between 1200 and 1800 CE, with possible earlier use around 1000 CE, Likinlulem is intertwined with local oral history. It was a site where paramount chiefs held court before the rise of Leluh in the 14th century. Though listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 2004, Likinlulem remains largely unexplored archaeologically.
