About
Erebuni Fortress, founded in 782 BCE by Urartian King Argishti I, is located on the Arin Berd hill in present-day Yerevan, Armenia. It was a strategic fortified city designed as a significant administrative and religious center, serving to protect the northern borders of the Urartian kingdom. The fortress, built with basalt, tuff, and adobe, featured ramparts, a grand palace, a citadel, and a temple dedicated to the god Khaldi. Its walls were adorned with murals depicting religious and secular themes. Erebuni played a crucial role in the Urartian military campaigns and later became part of the Achaemenian Empire. Despite numerous invasions, the city remained inhabited and evolved into modern Yerevan. Excavations have uncovered a wealth of artifacts, providing insights into Urartian life and culture.
