About

Riffa Fort, located in Riffa, Bahrain, is a significant historical and archaeological site. Originally constructed in the early 18th century by Fareer bin Rahhal, the fort was strategically positioned on a cliff to overlook the desert valley between East and West Riffa. It fell into disrepair but was later rebuilt by Sheikh Salman bin Ahmed Al Fateh Al Khalifa in 1812, utilizing the original foundation. This fortification not only served as a defensive structure but also as a residence for Sheikh Salman and later for his descendants. Most notably, Sheikh Isa bin Ali Al Khalifa, a prominent ruler of Bahrain, was born here. The fort is representative of the region's architectural and historical development during the late Post-Classical, Early Modern, and Industrial periods.
