Historical Context

About

Nesebar, an ancient city located on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, is a site with a rich tapestry of historical significance. Originally a Thracian settlement, it evolved into a prominent Greek colony in the 6th century BCE, known as Mesembria. As a key trading hub, it became a member of the Delian League under Athens in the 5th century BCE. The city witnessed the transition to Roman rule in 71 BCE while retaining privileges like minting its own coins. Throughout the medieval period, Nesebar was a strategic stronghold contested by the Byzantines and Bulgars. It experienced prosperity under the Second Bulgarian Empire, especially during the reign of Tsar Ivan Alexander. Despite a decline under Ottoman rule from the 15th century, the city's architectural and historical heritage endured, exemplifying a blend of Thracian, Greek, Roman, Byzantine, and Bulgarian influences. This heritage led to its recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983.
