Historical Context

About

Hwando is a significant mountain fortress constructed by the ancient Korean kingdom of Goguryeo. It was built to safeguard Goguryeo's second capital, Gungnae, and is located near present-day Ji'an city in Jilin province, China. As part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Capital Cities and Tombs of the Ancient Koguryo Kingdom, Hwando is recognized for its historical importance and architectural excellence. The fortress played a crucial role in Goguryeo's defense strategy. It witnessed significant historical events, including invasions by the Wei and Xianbei forces, which temporarily weakened Goguryeo but did not halt its expansion. Hwando's construction and strategic location highlight the military ingenuity and resilience of the Goguryeo kingdom during the Late Classical Period.
