About
El Hawawish is an ancient necropolis located in the 9th Nome of Upper Egypt, serving as the cemetery for the city of Akhmim. It holds significant archaeological importance due to its collection of tombs dating back to the Old Kingdom and extending into the First Intermediate Period. The site is closely associated with the deity Min, a god of fertility and productivity revered in the region. Archaeological excavations, led by Professor Naguib Kanawati under the direction of the Australian Centre for Egyptology, have extensively explored the tombs within the El Hawawish mountain. The findings provide valuable insights into funerary practices and the sociopolitical dynamics of ancient Egypt during these periods.
