About

Jish, known historically as Giscala, is an archaeologically rich site in Upper Galilee with a history spanning over 3,000 years. It features settlement remains from the Canaanite and Israelite periods, as well as significant structures from the Roman and Byzantine eras, including two synagogues and a mausoleum. The site played a role during the First Jewish–Roman War as a Jewish stronghold. Over time, it evolved into a predominantly Jewish village during the Late Post-Classical Period and later saw Maronite settlement in the Early Modern Period. Jish's archaeological significance is underscored by its diverse religious and cultural history, evidenced by rock-cut tombs, underground tunnels, and artifacts indicating silk and olive oil production.
