About

Tel Erani is a significant archaeological site located near Kiryat Gat, Israel, showcasing a rich multi-period history. Initially occupied during the Chalcolithic period, it later became a prominent city during the Early Bronze Age, revealing evidence of extensive Egyptian-Canaanite interactions. The site further flourished as a Philistine city during the Bronze and Iron Ages, although its exact biblical identification remains uncertain. A major city destruction event occurred in the 6th century BCE, likely at the hands of the Babylonians. During the Persian period, a temple was established, and traces of settlement continued into the Hellenistic, Byzantine, and Mamluk periods. Recent excavations have unveiled some of the oldest fortifications in Israel, dating back over 5,300 years, underscoring its historical significance.
