About
Tel Lachish, an archaeological site in Israel, was a significant city in ancient Canaan, prominently mentioned in historical texts and the Hebrew Bible. The site documents human occupation from the Pottery Neolithic period, with major developments during the Early Bronze, Middle Bronze, and Late Bronze Ages. It was notably fortified and equipped with defensive structures like walls and siege ramps. Lachish experienced various phases of destruction and rebuilding, including under Egyptian hegemony and later as an important city in the Kingdom of Judah. The city's capture by the Assyrians in 701 BCE and subsequent destruction by the Babylonians in 587 BCE are key historical events. Excavations have revealed religious, domestic, and military artifacts, enhancing our understanding of ancient Levantine urban centers.
