About
Pella, located in northwestern Jordan, is an ancient city with a rich history spanning multiple archaeological periods, including Neolithic, Chalcolithic, Bronze Age, Iron Age, Classical, and Post-Classical eras. The site is notable for its diverse range of structures, from Neolithic housing and Chalcolithic storage complexes to Hellenistic and Roman urban planning, including theatres and marketplaces. It was a center of early Christian activity, providing refuge during the First Jewish–Roman War. The city reached its peak during the Byzantine period and later saw Islamic influence. The site bears evidence of natural disasters, such as the 749 Galilee earthquake, which significantly impacted its development.
