About
Panga ya Saidi is a significant archaeological cave site located in southeastern Kenya. It provides a unique, continuous archaeological record spanning from the Middle Stone Age, around 78,000 years ago, to the Iron Age, approximately 400 years ago. The site features a stratified sequence of 19 layers, revealing a transition in lithic technologies from the Middle to Later Stone Age, characterized by a shift towards miniaturization and the use of different raw materials. The site also holds evidence of symbolic behavior, such as the use of marine shell beads and ochre, and contains faunal remains that offer insights into past subsistence strategies and environmental changes. Notably, it includes one of the oldest known intentional burials in Africa, dating to the Middle Stone Age. During the Iron Age, it was part of agricultural and trading networks, evidenced by plant and animal remains. Panga ya Saidi is crucial for understanding human adaptation and technological transitions in eastern Africa.
