About
Ksar el Barka, located in Mauritania, is a site of historical and archaeological significance. Originally established as Laaci-Wendu by the Fula Jaawbe clan in the early 12th century, this town was strategically positioned on the shores of Lake Gabou to control key passes through the Assaba mountains. Over centuries, it served as a focal point for Fula pastoralists and Soninke farmers, witnessing pivotal historical events such as the establishment of the Laam Termess dynasty. The site was later overtaken by the Jolof Empire in the mid-15th century. By the late 17th century, the Kounta migrated to the area due to increasing desertification. Today, Ksar el Barka stands as a testament to a rich tapestry of cultural and political influence throughout its history.
