About
Golem Grad, also known as Snake Island or Pelican Island, is located in Lake Prespa in North Macedonia. The island covers over 20 hectares and is presently uninhabited. It was last inhabited by a small monastic community until the mid-20th century. Archaeologically, the island is significant for its ancient ruins and churches, which suggest religious and ritual activities in the past. Its proximity to the borders of Greece and Albania enhances its historical importance in the region. Despite its uninhabited status, Golem Grad offers a rich habitat for various animal species, notably snakes, which contributes to its nickname. The island opened to tourists in August 2008, providing a glimpse into its historical and natural allure.
