About

The Church of Saint John at Kaneo is a significant archaeological site located in Ohrid, North Macedonia. Perched on a cliff overlooking Lake Ohrid, this 13th-century Macedonian Orthodox church is dedicated to John of Patmos. Though the exact construction date remains unknown, it is believed to have been built before the rise of the Ottoman Empire, around the 13th century. The church features a cruciform architectural plan and houses a wooden iconostasis. Notable frescoes, including a depiction of Christ Pantocrator on the dome, were uncovered during restoration in 1964. These frescoes add to the church's cultural and historical significance, reflecting Byzantine artistic influences and religious traditions of the region. The church remains a testament to the architectural and artistic achievements of its era.
