Historical Context

About

Værne Kloster, located in Rygge, Østfold, Norway, is an archaeological site featuring the ruins of a medieval monastery. Initially a Kongsgård estate, it was transformed into a Knights Hospitaller abbey around 1200 CE by King Sverre of Norway. This site not only served religious purposes but also functioned as a hospital for the king's army until 1308. The abbey was a significant pilgrimage site before being disestablished and placed under the crown in 1532. The buildings were eventually destroyed during the Northern Seven Years' War in 1570. Despite its ruinous state, Værne Kloster remains an important historical site, offering insights into medieval ecclesiastical and military practices in Norway.
