About
Cusco, located in southeastern Peru, is an archaeological site of immense historical and cultural significance, being the former capital of the Inca Empire. This city, established around the 12th century CE, showcases complex urban planning and architecture that includes palaces, temples, roads, and fortresses. The Killke culture initially inhabited the area, constructing structures like the Saksaywaman fortress around 1100 CE. The Inca expanded upon these foundations, creating a city that functioned as the heart of their vast empire until the Spanish conquest in the 16th century CE. The Spanish colonization led to the integration of indigenous and colonial architecture, visible in structures such as the Coricancha and the Cusco Cathedral. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983, Cusco remains a testament to the sophisticated engineering and cultural achievements of the Inca civilization.
