Gran Saposoa

Gran Saposoa is a significant archaeological site located in the Andean cloud forests of the Amazonas region in Peru. It consists of a cluster of ruins attributed to the Chachapoyas culture, characterized by hundreds of round stone structures. These structures are spread across an extensive area and are indicative of domestic and habitation features such as houses and towns, reflecting the societal organization of the Chachapoyas people during the Post-Classical Period, particularly between 500 CE and 1500 CE. Despite claims of discovery in the late 20th century, the site was known to local residents and was not a new find. The site has faced challenges with looting, raising concerns about the protection of archaeological heritage in Peru.
