About
Saint Nicholas Church on Lipno Island is a significant archaeological and historical site reflecting the architectural and cultural heritage of 13th-century Russian Orthodoxy. Constructed in the late 13th century, the church is noted for its architectural design, reminiscent of the Nativity Church on Peryn Island, and for its large icon of Saint Nicholas painted by Aleksa Petrov in 1294. Despite periods of desertion in the 18th and 19th centuries and significant damage during World War II, the church remains a part of the Historic Monuments of Novgorod and Surroundings, a recognized World Heritage Site. Notably, the church also features a set of 13th-century frescoes discovered in 1930, adding to its archaeological importance. The site's enduring cultural and historical value is underscored by contemporary events, such as President Vladimir Putin's attendance at a Christmas Eve service in 2021.
