Historical Context

About

Timerevo is an archaeological site located near Yaroslavl, Russia, known for its role as a Scandinavian trade outpost in the early medieval period. The site, covering five hectares, was initially settled in the 9th century by Norse merchants and the local population. It is particularly notable for the discovery of large hoards of Arabic dirhams, indicating its significance along the Volga trade route. Despite lacking fortifications, it served as a key trading hub. The site was temporarily abandoned at the end of the 9th century but was revived in the 10th century, evidenced by the presence of at least 400 druzhina kurgans and the prevalence of Scandinavian pottery and Christian symbols. It was finally abandoned in the early 11th century, coinciding with regional shifts in settlement patterns.
