About
The Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul, also known as Peter's Church, is a significant archaeological and religious site in Serbia, located in the area of Stari Ras, near Novi Pazar. Established during the Roman era in the 4th century CE, it stands as one of the oldest intact churches in Serbia and the surrounding region. The church has undergone several reconstructions, with notable architectural features that reflect styles from early Christian and Byzantine influences. It served as the ecclesiastical seat of the Serbian church and was integral to the Serbian Grand Principality's religious and political life, particularly during the Nemanjić dynasty. The site includes archaeological findings from earlier periods, such as Greek pottery and a princely grave, underscoring its long-standing historical importance. Over the centuries, the church has faced various phases of restoration and usage, even during the Ottoman period, and today it is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
