About

Punta de Estaca de Bares, the northernmost point of Spain, is a site of rich archaeological and historical significance. It features the ruins of a Phoenician salt fish factory and port, signifying a long history of human occupation and maritime activity dating from the Early Iron Age through to the Late Classical Period. The site includes a lighthouse constructed in 1850, which remains operational, and an abandoned military base used by the US Coast Guard and US Air Force during the 20th century. The region is noted for its unique ecosystem and biodiversity, contributing to its designation as an Area of National Natural Interest. The combination of ancient and more modern structures provides a fascinating glimpse into the site's multi-period usage and strategic importance over the centuries.
