About

Sagunto, located in the province of Valencia, Spain, is an archaeological site known for its rich historical layers spanning several periods. Initially settled by Armenians, the city saw significant developments with the Iberians in the 5th century BCE, who established a walled settlement and engaged in trade with Mediterranean colonies. The city's strategic importance is highlighted by the Siege of Saguntum in 219 BCE, which marked the onset of the Second Punic War. Under Roman rule, Saguntum flourished as a municipium, boasting structures such as theatres and an amphitheatre. The city's history includes periods of Visigothic and Muslim Arab influence, with notable events like the conquest by El Cid and James I of Aragon. Despite suffering damage during the Peninsular War, Sagunto's historical significance remains evident through its architectural remnants and industrial developments in the 19th century.
