Historical Context

About

Runestone U 582, once located by the church of Söderby-Karl in the Roslagen area of Sweden, dates back to the 11th century CE. This runestone is particularly significant as it contains what is believed to be the earliest written mention of Finland. The stone was erected by Bjǫrn and Ígulfríðr in memory of their son Ótryggr, who was killed in Finland. Although the stone has been lost since before 1830, the inscription has been preserved in records. This artifact is a key piece of cultural heritage, reflecting not only the artistic practices of runic inscriptions but also providing insights into the early medieval connections between Sweden and Finland.
