About

Aventicum, the largest town and capital of Roman Switzerland, was a thriving city established in the early 1st century CE. Strategically located on a major Roman road connecting Italy and Britain, it reached its zenith when Emperor Vespasian elevated it to colonia status. The city featured significant structures including an amphitheatre, theatre, and the Cigognier Temple, reflecting its importance as a center for the Imperial cult and regional governance. Despite its fortifications, Aventicum succumbed to an attack by the Alemanni in the late 3rd century CE, leading to its decline. By the 6th century, the ecclesiastical seat moved to Lausanne, marking Aventicum's transition into ruins. Today, its remains near Avenches continue to offer valuable insights into Roman urban planning and culture.
