Historical Context

About

The Nebelivka archaeological site, located in Kirovohrad Oblast, Ukraine, is a significant ancient mega-settlement attributed to the Cucuteni-Trypillian culture. Dating back to around 4000 BCE, the site spans an impressive 260-300 hectares, suggesting it was home to a substantial population of 15,000 to 17,000 people. Key features include a boundary ditch, over 1200 structures, and a significant two-storey temple structure measuring 60 by 20 meters, which points to the community's complex social and religious practices. The temple contained artefacts such as Venus figurines and altars, indicating its use for ceremonial purposes. The scale and complexity of the site imply advanced societal organization, potentially comparable to state-level societies of the same era.
