About
Nashaq, an ancient city in the northern al-Jawf region of present-day Yemen, holds significant archaeological value due to its association with the ancient Kingdom of Ma'in. In the 7th century BCE, it was a target of the campaign led by Karib'il Watar, a prominent figure of the period, who sought to expand his influence over the region by capturing Nashaq and its neighboring city, Nashan. This campaign underscored the strategic importance of Nashaq in the ancient South Arabian context. By the 1st century BCE, the city was recognized as 'Nescus' during the Roman expedition led by Aelius Gallus under Augustus, although the expedition itself was unsuccessful. The city's mention by notable historical figures highlights its role in the broader geopolitical dynamics of the period. Today, Nashaq remains a testament to the rich cultural and historical tapestry of ancient South Arabia.
