About
Cherchell, located on Algeria's Mediterranean coast, is an archaeological site of great historical significance. Originally a Phoenician trading post named Iol, it evolved into a major center during various eras. Under Roman rule, it became Caesarea, the capital of Mauretania Caesariensis, boasting remarkable urban infrastructure such as theaters, amphitheaters, and defensive walls. The city flourished with a blend of Roman, Greek, and Egyptian architectural styles introduced by Juba II and Cleopatra Selene II. Over the centuries, Cherchell has witnessed various conquests, including those by Vandals, Byzantines, and Umayyad Muslims, each leaving a distinct mark on its cultural landscape. Today, the remnants of Cherchell's past, including its mosaics, temples, and cisterns, continue to offer insights into the diverse civilizations that once thrived there.
