About
Tassili n'Ajjer is a significant archaeological site located on a plateau in the Sahara Desert of southeastern Algeria. Renowned for its extensive prehistoric rock art, the site is a testament to the region's rich Neolithic history. With occupation evidence dating from 5500 to 1500 BCE, the area offers insight into the lifestyle of transhumant pastoralists who adapted to environmental changes over millennia. The site's rock art, including 15,000 engravings, depicts large animals, cattle herding, and human activities, evolving through distinct artistic traditions: Archaic, Round Head, Bovidian, Horse, and Camel. The presence of these art forms reflects the cultural and climatic shifts in the Central Sahara, highlighting the development of pastoralism and trans-Saharan trade routes. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Tassili n'Ajjer provides crucial understanding of ancient human adaptation in the Sahara.
