About
Theveste, a Roman colony founded in 75 CE, is located in modern-day Tébessa, Algeria. Established near an ancient Berber village to control the Aurès Mountains, it became a prominent Roman city. Initially, it hosted the Legio III Augusta and was later elevated to a colonia under Emperor Trajan. By the time of Septimius Severus, Theveste had grown into a flourishing city with a significant population and served as an important religious center. During the 3rd and 4th centuries CE, it became notable for its Christian community and the Donatist council. The Vandals raided the city in the 5th century CE, followed by reconstruction under Byzantine rule during Justinian I's reign. Despite near destruction by the Umayyad Caliphate, Theveste's historical significance endures through its ancient monuments, including a triumphal arch and a Christian basilica.
